Report: Merkel tells EU Russia to increase Germany’s gas reserves

LONDON, Oct 27 (PRIME) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel last week told the EU leaders that Russia will increase Germany’s gas reserves, the Financial Times newspaper said on Wednesday, citing foreign sources.

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the EU leaders last week that Russia has committed to increasing the amount of natural gas stored in the country,” the newspaper said.

So far, there is little evidence of an increase in Germany’s reserves, the newspaper said.

The EU has prices increase significantly triggering a serious rise in the cost of electricity. The European Commission said that Russian gas giant Gazprom, the main supplier of gas to the European Union, although fulfilling long-term contracts with customers, has not responded to higher demand this time, as it did in previous years.

At the same time, Gazprom said that the company’s gas exports to the non-CIS countries increased by 15.3% on the year to 145.8 billion cubic meters of gas in January–September. This is the second highest figure for the nine months in the history of supplies.
